U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science, led a subcommittee hearing to review the President’s fiscal year 2027 budget request for several federal law enforcement agencies on May 15.
The hearing focused on funding needs and challenges facing the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Marshals Service, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The discussion took place during National Police Week.
“This hearing takes place during National Police Week, and this is a time for our country to recognize the men and women in law enforcement who work every day to keep our communities and country safe,” Moran said at the start of the session.
Moran described specific examples from his home state: “I’ve seen firsthand the important work these agencies are doing in my home state. Whether it’s ATF expanding crime gun intelligence through its partnership at Wichita State University; DEA’s effort to combat fentanyl trafficking and support law enforcement in rural communities across Kansas; the FBI’s coordination with state and local partners as Kansas City prepares to host soccer matches during the FIFA 2026 World Cup or the Marshals working alongside local law enforcement through fugitive task forces across the district of Kansas.”
He added that “today’s hearing is an opportunity for this committee to better understand the challenges facing each of your agencies, the resources you believe are necessary to carry out your missions and how Congress can best support the men and women serving in federal law enforcement.”
Moran has served seven terms representing Kansas’s 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives before his current role as senator according to his official website. He holds an economics degree from Fort Hays State University and University of Kansas as well as a Juris Doctor from University of Kansas School of Law according to his official website. In addition to chairing this subcommittee, he serves on other committees including Veterans’ Affairs and Agriculture according to his official website.
The broader implications discussed included ongoing efforts by federal agencies in areas such as crime prevention partnerships with universities, combating drug trafficking in rural regions, preparing security measures for major events like FIFA World Cup matches, and supporting joint operations with local authorities.
