U.S. Senators Jerry Moran and Richard Blumenthal introduced bipartisan legislation on May 15 to ensure that disability compensation and other financial benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs keep pace with inflation for veterans, their families, and military survivors.
The proposed Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2026 aims to align annual increases in VA benefits—including disability compensation, clothing allowances, and dependency and indemnity compensation for surviving spouses and children—with changes in the cost of living. The bill would make these adjustments consistent with those made by the Social Security Administration.
“Congress has a responsibility to deliver meaningful benefits for veterans and their families, and the annual cost-of-living adjustment helps make certain VA benefits keep pace with changes in the economy,” said Senator Moran. “These increases will strengthen VA’s ability to support veterans with service-connected disabilities, as well as their dependents and survivors, by adjusting for inflation and aligning with Social Security benefit increases to provide the financial stability veterans and their families have earned.”
“As the cost of groceries, housing, and gas continues to skyrocket, veterans deserve to know their benefits will keep pace,” said Senator Blumenthal. “I’m proud to join Senator Moran in introducing legislation that will make much needed adjustments to veterans’ benefits during this cost of living crisis.”
The full text of the legislation is available online. The bill is cosponsored by several senators from both parties.
The Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee has contributed to social progress by improving access to VA health care services, aiding transitions for former service members into civilian life, maintaining offices within the U.S. Capitol complex, collaborating closely with entities such as the Department of Veterans Affairs, overseeing programs supporting national veterans across America—including health care—and exercising jurisdiction over all federal veteran programs according to the official website.
Jerry Moran serves as chairman while Richard Blumenthal is ranking member of this committee according to its official website.
