Colby Community College competed with a team for the first time in three years when they hosted a Central Plains Region rodeo on Sept. 16-18 at the Thomas County Fairgrounds.
"Our teammates worked very hard to produce a good rodeo," said first-year coach LeRoy Hays.
Though the college has hosted the annual rodeo despite not having a team, the 654 entries this year made it one of the largest events in CCC history.
"We couldn't have done it without help from the college and the support from the community," Hays said.
Two weeks later, nine Trojans were in Durant, Okla., on Sept. 29, 30, and Oct. 1 to compete in the home arena of Southwestern Oklahoma University. The next stop for 14 CCC athletes was in Stillwater, Okla., on Oct. 13-15 at Oklahoma State University.
Hays is optimistic and said his team is making progress each week.
"I see the work the team puts in, and it continues to help them improve every practice."
The squad travels to Alva, Okla., Oct. 27-29 for a rodeo hosted by Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Fourteen athletes are scheduled to compete.
"I feel that we will have a very good outing as a team," Hays added. "They have been working very hard at practices."
