Campus will come alive with music events in March
March 5 | Choir Concert
A concert featuring the University Choir and the Pitt State Chorale is planned for 3 p.m. March 5 in the Sharon Kay Dean Recital Hall in McCray Hall. These student ensembles are led by Music Chair Susan Marchant. The program will present choral music in a variety of styles, including several works that will be accompanied by the Fisk Opus 106 organ. Admission is free.
March 5 | Bicknell Center Presents: The U.S. Navy Band
Direct from Washington, D.C., the premier wind ensemble of the U.S. Navy will perform a concert filled with marches, patriotic selections, and modern repertoire starting at 7 p.m. on March 5 in the Linda & Lee Scott Performance Hall at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts. Admission is free. Tickets may be picked up at the Box Office during business hours through Friday.
March 9 | Symphonic Band Concert
The Pitt State Symphonic Band will perform in concert starting at 7 p.m. in the Linda & Lee Scott Performance Hall at the Bicknell Center. This student band is led by Associate Professor Andrew Chybowski. Admission is free.
March 21 | Percussion Ensemble Concert
The Pitt State Percussion Ensemble will perform in concert starting at 7 p.m. in the Linda & Lee Scott Performance Hall at the Bicknell Center. This student ensemble will perform the percussion music of Christopher Rouse, Lee Hartman, Emmanuel Sejourne, Brett Dietz, Paul Smadbeck, and traditional Mexican Marimba selections. This student ensemble is led by Professor Jim Clanton. Admission is free.
March 26 | SEK Symphony Concert
The Southeast Kansas Symphony will present its 2023 Rising Stars concert at 3 p.m. in the Linda & Lee Scott Performance Hall at the Bicknell Center. This ensemble, comprised of students, faculty, staff, and community members, is directed by Associate Professor Raul Mungui and graduate conducting major Johnathan De Soto Jr. The program will feature the winners of the Rising Stars Concerto & Aria Competition. Admission is free.
March 31 | Solo & Chamber Music Series Concert
The nationally touring vocal ensemble Tapestry (Web of Lace) will perform at Pitt State as the next in the Solo & Chamber Music Series. Their concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Sharon Kay Dean Recital Hall in McCray Hall.
For this concert, singers Cristi Catt, Daniela Tosic, and Deborah Rentz-Moore join forces with violist Rachel Jayson and pianist Noriko Yasuda in works that mix every possible combination of voice, viola, and piano.
Founded in 1995, Tapestry has established an international reputation for bold conceptual programming: combining medieval and traditional repertory with contemporary compositions. Their festival program “Web of Lace” resounds with vocal, chamber and solo works with echoes of impressionism and a touch of jazz.
The program celebrates extraordinary women composers throughout history, including Modesta Bor, Lili Boulanger, Rebecca Clarke, Florence Price, and Germaine Tailleferre.
Tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for over 65 and under 18. Tickets are free to PSU students with a valid ID. Tickets are on sale at the Pitt State Ticket Office, pittstate.edu/tickets, 107 Garfield Weede Building, 620-235-4796.
