The second game of 2023 was a challenge for the Trojans women's basketball team as they lost a Jan. 7 contest in Dodge City, 87-60.

Out of the gate, the Conquistadors went on a 10-0 run aided by back-to-back 3-pointers from Jada Burton. After a Colby timeout, Peyton Pinkney scored, and Jayla Sample knocked down four of her 13 first-half points to get Colby back into the game. Both teams shot 35%, and Dodge had a slight rebounding edge, 27-26. However, the Conquistadors took advantage of 15 Trojans turnovers to build a 47-29 lead by the break.

As they have done this season, the Trojans played better in the second half, but the Conquistador advantage was too big to overcome. Ball possession was the deciding factor on the night, as Dodge converted 27 Colby turnovers into 34 points compared to eight points for Colby on 11 Dodge miscues.

For the first time this season, the Trojans had three players score in double figures. Sample finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Aaliyah Chambers posted 11 points and 10 rebounds. Pinkney added 18 points, while Ileah Beh grabbed 10 rebounds.

Burton led the Conquistadors with a triple-double, 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists.

The Trojans return to the Colby Event Center on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip as they host Barton Community College.
