Canyon TX – This weekend saw a great start to Northwest Tech's outdoor track season. There were many strong performances, with several national qualifiers and personal records. The competition took place at West Texas A&M University.
Sprints & Field Events:
In the Men's 100-Meter Dash, Northwest Tech had five runers compete, with three finishing in the top 10. Coming in 3rd place was Sophomore Derrick Harbin with a time of 10.57 seconds. Finishing in 6th place was Jaysaun Smith, with a time of 10.71 seconds. Coming in 8th was Marcus Purcell, with a time of 10.89 seconds. Also competing in the race were Jaiden Carter, coming in 13th, and Kobey Taylor coming in 18th. In the Women's 100-Meter Dash, Sophomore Shalai Dye competed, placing 14th with a time of 13.49 seconds.
In the 200-Meter Dash, two runners finished in the top 5, with Jaysaun Smith finishing 2nd in a time of 21.37 sec. and Marcus Purcell finishing 3rd in 21.41 seconds. Finishing 11th was Jaiden Carter with a time of 22.51 seconds, and finishing 12th was Derrick Harbin with a time of 22.54 seconds.
In the Men's 4x100 Meter Relay, Northwest Tech placed 2nd overall with a time of 40.71 seconds, which narrowly missed qualifying for nationals. The relay included the following sprinters: Derrick Harbin, Marcus Purcell, Jaysaun Smith, and Jaydon Moore.
In Pole Vault for the Mavs, Brayden Shaw placed 2nd, setting a new school record with a vault of 4.25 meters. Competing in Women's Javelin was Freshman Hope Perry placing 5th with a personal best of 27.70 meters.
Long & Middle Distance:
In the 1500 Meters, Tech had four runners, all of which finished in the top 10. Freshman Brian Kiptoo placed 1st with a time of (3:56.06) (altitude conversion: (3:52.94)), breaking the previous school record. Coming in 3rd was Raphael Kitur with a time of (4:02.49). Finishing just behind in 4th was Sophomore Peter Kipkemboi with a time of (4:03.03). The last of the Mavericks to finish was Brian Kipkosgei in 8th place with a time of (4:33.51). Three of the four runners qualified for nationals after altitude conversion.
In the 5000 Meters, all four long-distance runners competed again, with three of them finishing in the top 10 and qualifying for nationals. Finishing in 2nd was Freshman Brian Kiptoo with a time of (14:54.17). Placing 6th was Peter Kipkemboi with a time of (15:15.54). Finishing in 10th was Sophomore Raphael Kitur with a time of (15:21.46). The last of the Mavs to finish was Brian Kipkosgei in 22nd with a time of (17:06.04).
The Mavs' next meet will be at the Texas Relays on March 29th through April 1st at Texas University in Austin, TX.
