U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, led a committee hearing to consider two nominations for positions at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The nominees under consideration were Cheryl Mason for Inspector General and Don Bergin for Assistant Secretary for Congressional and Legislative Affairs.

Senator Moran emphasized the significance of having a Senate-confirmed Inspector General. "I have spoken many times here in this hearing and elsewhere about the importance of having a Senate-confirmed Inspector General," said Sen. Moran. He highlighted that the work of an Inspector General is crucial in identifying areas where the VA may be lacking. "The IG’s work is essential to identifying areas where VA is falling short, and this committee’s job would be much harder without the help of an Inspector General," he added.

Moran also expressed his anticipation to hear from Cheryl Mason, who has been appointed to high-level positions within the VA by both President Biden and President Trump. "I look forward to hearing this afternoon how Cheryl Mason – the nominee for VA Inspector General – would continue the IG’s independent oversight if she is confirmed."

In discussing Don Bergin's nomination, Senator Moran noted challenges with transparency at the Department of Veterans Affairs regardless of political leadership. “Regardless of which party is in the White House or which party has control in Congress, the Department of Veterans Affairs has never been as open and as forthcoming as they should be,” stated Sen. Moran. He expressed hope that Bergin could address these issues effectively if confirmed.

Senator Moran’s line of questioning can be accessed online along with his opening statement.
