U.S. Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall, along with U.S. Representative Ron Estes, have reached out to Acting United States Postal Service (USPS) Postmaster General Doug Tulino. They are advocating for the retention of a United States Post Office in Park City, Kansas.
The lawmakers stated, "We write to express our support of Park City, Kansas’ request to retain its current Contract Postal Unit (CPU) located at 6223 North Broadway Street, or obtain a new Post Office location." They emphasized that Park City's growth should be supported by maintaining USPS services within the city limits.
They highlighted the essential role of USPS in Kansas communities: "USPS provides critical support to communities across Kansas by supporting economic growth through the delivery of goods to businesses, medicine to disabled veterans, and ballots to local election offices." The legislators warned that losing postal services would negatively impact businesses and residents.
Park City is experiencing significant commercial and residential development. The population is projected to exceed 12,000 in the next decade. The lawmakers argued that it would be unwise for USPS not to maintain a presence there.
Leeker’s Family Foods currently holds the contract for the CPU and has expressed willingness to negotiate terms more favorable for USPS than those established before 2019. This negotiation could ensure consistent service while exploring long-term options.
The history of Park City dates back to its founding as a public housing district in the 1950s for aerospace industry workers. It has since become an independent municipality with nearly 9,300 residents and continues attracting industry and newcomers.
